Former Microsoft and Coinstar Executives Join MOD Systems’ Board of Directors
Will Poole and Dan Gerrity Take Active Roles Overseeing Go-to-Market Strategies and Corporate Direction as MOD Systems Rolls Out Retail Digital Entertainment Solution
- March 1, 2010 - SeattleMOD Systems, Inc. announced today that notable technology industry executives Will Poole and Dan Gerrity have joined the company's Board of Directors. Poole and Gerrity have spent decades developing early stage companies and building successful organizations in the software, retail and digital entertainment industries. Their support of MOD Systems comes as the company prepares to introduce a broad digital entertainment solution that brings movies, television shows, music and games to consumers through kiosks in retail and other out-of-home environments. Poole and Gerrity join MOD Systems' existing board members Michael Towers and CEO Anthony Bay, along with board observers from NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) and Toshiba Corporation. NCR and Toshiba are MOD Systems' largest investors.
"Building out our board is an important part of our strategy of bringing on impressive senior talent across the organization at a time of great momentum and anticipated growth," said Chairman and CEO Anthony Bay. "Both Will and Dan have unmatched experience in our target industries, and in organizational development and leadership. Both have built organizations from development stage to global success, and their skills, styles and guidance are welcome additions to our board. We're fortunate to have them join us."
Will Poole has a 25-year history of running large product development and marketing organizations, and now is an independent social-technologist, primarily focused on applying technology to education. He is currently co-chairman of NComputing, which shipped its second millionth virtual desktop in 2009, deployed largely in schools in emerging markets. Previously, Poole served as corporate vice president of the Unlimited Potential Group at Microsoft, co-leading efforts to bring social and economic opportunity to the "next billion." As senior vice president, Windows Client at Microsoft, Poole delivered 30 percent of corporate revenues and shipped multiple versions of Windows. He also created New Media Platforms for Windows and led other internet and digital media groups. Poole joined Microsoft in 1996 with the acquisition of eShop, an internet e-commerce pioneer that he co-founded in 1991. Poole serves on the boards of Pengala, the University of Washington's I-LABS, and the Voices Education Project. He received a degree in Computer Science from Brown University and is co-chair of the Boldly Brown campaign for the Pacific Northwest.
"I have respected Anthony Bay's vision and leadership for a long time and am pleased to be working with him again," said Poole. "He's done a remarkable job focusing MOD on a cleverly-blended technology and business strategy around digital entertainment sales at retail. I'm impressed with the company's focus, partnerships, market opportunity and team, and I look forward to contributing to their global success."
Dan Gerrity is a seasoned technology executive with experience that spans entrepreneurial genesis through IPO and emerging growth companies. He is currently vice president of business development for Intellectual Ventures, a Nathan Myhrvold company, where he is responsible for commercializing the inventions Myhrvold and his team of scientists have developed and patented. Previously, Gerrity served as the CEO of Naverus Inc., an aviation technology firm producing software for flight management systems, and president and CEO of Coinstar, Inc., an international consumer financial services company. Joining Coinstar in 1993 as the founding CTO, Gerrity progressed through COO, president, and CEO of the company, which went public in 1997. He has also held marketing and engineering management positions at Slate Corporation, founded Serra Systems, and worked as a software engineer at IBM. Gerrity has a BSEE, MSEE Computer Systems, and an MBA from Stanford University.
"MOD is now focused on the fundamentals of digital entertainment distribution," said Gerrity. "The team has aligned the right partners in NCR and Toshiba, the technology expertise necessary for scale, impressive entertainment industry relationships, and a thoughtful growth strategy. I'm pleased to serve the company at this foundational juncture."
With the new board appointments and expanded management team, Kyleen Cane stepped down from the company's board. Cane was a valued board member for 18 months, helping MOD Systems navigate through a critical transitional period. "Kyleen has been a tremendous asset to the company, contributing an extraordinary legal mind and business acumen, along with a great sense of humor-all imperative qualities over this past year," said Bay. "We are fortunate to have had Kyleen's support in moving MOD to a position of strength and growth. She will always be a great friend to the company and we wish her the very best."
